Using Registered Apprenticeship to Attract, Train and Retain Veteran Talent
The Department of Labor Veterans’ Employment and Training Service (DOL VETS) hosted a webinar in support of National Apprenticeship Week 2022 that highlighted three employers who are utilizing the Registered Apprenticeship model to attract, train, and retain veterans.

Learn how Adaptive Construction Solutions, McCarthy, and Amazon Web Services have structured their programs, how they are using federal and state funding to reduce costs, to include WIOA, DOL grants and the VA VET TEC program, and how they are engaging with the workforce system and other resources to diversify their employees.

Module 1, Introduction to Register Apprenticeship, is intended give VR&E Counselors and Employment Coordinators, as well as Disabled Veterans’ Outreach Program specialists (DVOPs), and Local Veterans’ Employment Representatives (LVERs) an overview of the registered apprenticeship model and why it can be a great fit for Veterans. In the following webinar, Hughes McLean, Apprenticeship & Training Representative and Veteran Liaison for the Department of Labor’s Office of Apprenticeship, supported participants in: describing Registered Apprenticeship Programs (RAPs), the components of the program, and breadth of opportunities; summarizing the benefits of RAPs to the veteran,

the employer and the Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) program; identifying a working knowledge of the different partners in a RAP; discussing different tools and approaches to locating appropriate RAPs in their region and; establishing a connection between veteran needs and apprenticeship fit. Hughes McLean also engaged in a robust question and answer session with webinar participants.

Connecting VR&E Participants to Registered Apprenticeship
To support the transition of more VR&E participants into RAPs, the combined workgroup developed a set of trainings and resources for VR&E counselors and employment coordinators. The Desk Reference at the below website is meant to accompany a set of webinar-based trainings on the same topics. The information contained in this guide replicates the information contained in the recorded trainings and also includes a list of resources, a glossary of terms and acronyms, and an Appendix with more information on Chapter 31 and 33 benefits.

Connecting Veterans to Apprenticeship Videos
To learn more about how the VR&E helps veterans with service-connected disabilities transition into civilian employment through apprenticeship, watch these three video profiles.

Michael Kormas is the National Employment Coordinator with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. He has been advising veterans and employers who are looking to hire apprentices for two decades.

Auriana Robin sets up apprenticeships for Apprenti – an intermediary organization in the tech industry. She recruits employers and helps veterans get placed into apprenticeships and eventually be hired permanently.

Brandon Henning was medically discharged due to combat injuries after 16 years of Active Duty and a deployment as a heavy equipment mechanic with a Stryker brigade in Iraq. For the last four years he has been working for US Fire Equipment in Sumner, Washington, where he finished his apprenticeship in May of 2020 as an inside sales engineer.
